Origins and Significance

The Legend of Qu Yuan
According to legend, Qu Yuan was a loyal and patriotic minister who was exiled due to political intrigue. In protest and despair, he threw himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Upon hearing of his death, people paddled out in fishing boats to search for his body and ward off evil spirits by beating drums and splashing water. Over time, these rituals evolved into the Dragon Boat Festival.
